what for 和 why

今天我們來看這個問題：what for 和 why 一樣嗎 ?
回答這個問題前，先來看一段對話 :

HR: I’ll send you a form later.
New staff: What for?
HR: …….?
New staff: Why will you send me a form?
HR: It’s our procedure.

看出其中的不同嗎？ What for 和 Why 不全然相同。 Why 是中性的； What for? 弦外之音是「何必」、「幹嘛」，嫌對方多此舉。


類似的例子，我們來看看 how come 和 why is that? 意思接近，都問原因；但 how come 更帶有疑惑味道，「怎麼回事？」的意思。

例如：
Ａ： He’s got the sack. ( 他被解僱了 )
Ｂ： How come? I thought he was a high flier. ( 怎麼回事，他不是很優秀嗎？ )

Inquiry 和 enquiry

《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》   「Inquiry（調查、詢問、查詢）＝enquiry」

猶如中文的「裏」和「裡」，兩個寫法意思沒有分別，讀音也相同。


不過，

英式英文有inquiry和enquiry分道揚鑣的趨勢，以enquiry指查詢，而以inquiry指較深入的調查    

例如： 

1. The committee was charged with the responsibility of making an inquiry into the case （委員會須負責調查這件事
2. The solicitor wrote in reply to his enquiry about the status of the divorce case       （律師回信答覆他對離婚案進展情況的查詢）

有學者認為，這樣分辨inquiry和enquiry毫無必要；所以，上述inquiry和enquiry的分別，不理 會也沒有問題。


美式英文無論是說查詢還是較深入的調查，多數都用inquiry這寫法。
